The Pattern Agency

Behind the Article: How We Wrote About AI and the Future of Pattern Design

When we decided to write about how AI is impacting pattern design – especially in the textile industry – we had a clear vision: to create an article that doesn’t just speculate about the future, but is grounded in real industry insights. We knew the topic was trending, but also complex. That’s why we wanted to truly understand it.

We started by mapping out how AI is already being used in today’s design processes. We read reports, tested tools, and had internal discussions about what really changes when creative work meets machine learning. It quickly became clear that AI is already influencing how patterns for textiles are developed – from concept to finished fabric pattern. But we also realized that reading alone wouldn’t be enough. To get a more nuanced picture, we needed to speak with people who work with pattern designs every day.

So, we reached out to professionals from different parts of the textile and design world – including surface pattern designers who combine digital tools with traditional techniques. It took several rounds of outreach, but eventually, we had three great conversations that truly helped shape the heart of the article. These experts generously shared their thoughts on AI, their creative process, and their vision for the future of surface pattern design.

Throughout the writing process, we chose to work in an agile way. We tested different titles, structures, and angles. Sometimes we had to take a step back and rethink. Other times, we decided to dive deeper into something we had originally planned to mention only briefly. Our goal was always to strike a balance between being informative and inspiring.

We also wanted to write for multiple audiences. The article is for pattern designers, but also for companies looking to buy pattern design solutions or better understand how AI might impact their creative workflows. Many businesses are wondering which design pattern to use when launching new collections – and this is where AI can offer both inspiration and efficiency. At the same time, we wanted to stay grounded in reality: AI is a tool, not a replacement.

One thing we took away from this process is that AI doesn’t replace the human touch in design – it enhances it. A pattern today is more than just a visual. It’s a story, a functional decision, and an interplay between technology and creativity. AI isn’t the whole answer, but it’s an important part of the bigger picture. Whether you’re working with different types of pattern, exploring pattern names, or considering a surface pattern design course to expand your skills – the human element still leads.
