From us at The Pattern Agency đź’›

There’s a lot of talk about AI right now – how it’s affecting our jobs, our creativity, and how we create. As people working in pattern design, we really feel it. Technology is advancing rapidly, and of course, it makes us wonder: What happens to the human touch when AI steps in?
We’ve had some great conversations with key people in the industry – Jonas Unenge from Borås Cotton, Tommy Franzén from Franzéns Textil, and Johanna Törnebohm from Colourwear – to get their take on the situation. It turned into such a wonderful discussion about both the opportunities, concerns, and the love for craftsmanship.
Challenges in a Changing Industry
Let’s start where it stings a little. Tommy shares that it’s a constant chase to keep up – new tools, new demands, new technology. It’s all about staying on your toes. Jonas mentions that nowadays, it almost feels wrong to use color and patterns. Everything has to be beige, muted, clean. And Johanna says that the hardest part is understanding customers in this fast-paced digital world. We really agree – it’s moving quickly now.
Digitalization = Both Help and Hindrance
At the same time, digitalization can be a real game-changer. Tommy loves how quickly ideas can be tested and brought to life today. It allows for more play and spontaneity. But there’s a downside too. Jonas feels it risks becoming soulless. The human touch seems to vanish. Johanna points out that the right skills are required to use the technology properly. And we see a clear need for this – to educate, guide, and support.
Can AI Replace the Creators?
The short answer is: no. AI can help. It can save time, automate tasks, maybe even inspire. But what makes pattern design come alive – the personal touch, the feeling, the intuition – will always come from a human. Jonas put it perfectly: AI can create, but it can’t feel. And that’s where the real difference lies.
At The Pattern Agency, we work exactly in that space – where technology meets humanity. Our pattern designers use AIas a tool, but it’s their heart, experience, and courage to break norms that makes the work unique. Because that’s where the magic happens.
So, What Happens Now?
We believe in a future where technology and creativity can work together – not against each other. But we will always stand up for the importance of the human side of design. Because that’s where the soul is. And that’s exactly what we help companies find – their own expression, their own mark.
